The Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, said on Thursday night (2nd) that Capes (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) will receive 5,300 new scholarships for graduate students. The announcement took place in a post on twitter after meetings held throughout the day with secretaries of the portfolio, presidents of municipalities, Inep (National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira) and FNDE (National Fund for the Development of Education) and Capes itself.

According to Santana, the grants will be aimed at 3,200 postgraduate courses, out of the 6,000 existing in the country. “Still in March, the number of benefits for master’s and doctoral scholarship holders will rise from 84,300 to 89,600. This increase in the number of benefits is the result of the new calculations of the concession model, which we updated in 2023”, he said, signaling that the ordinance should be published in the Official Gazette (DOU) in the coming days.

The announcement of new graduate scholarships comes two weeks after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) made official the 40% readjustment in Capes values. During the announcement, Camilo Santana also said that the ministry would increase the offer of master’s and doctoral scholarships by 26%.
