Caiado, Bolsonaro’s ally, emphasizes ‘peaceful and respectful coexistence’ with Lula – 02/23/2023 – Politics

An ally of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), the governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (União Brasil), highlighted this Thursday (23) the importance of dialogue with the new Lula government, stating that states cannot survive without the participation of the Unity.

The governor also added that a “peaceful and respectful coexistence” is important and said that governing with all federal entities, regardless of whether they are allies or opponents, is the “republican way of governing.”

The governor was at the Planalto Palace this Thursday morning (23) for a meeting with Minister Alexandre Padilha (Secretary of Institutional Relations). The Acting Governor of the Federal District, Celina Leão (PP) also participated in the meeting, whose objective was to discuss the public transport that connects the two states.

Caiado was asked by journalists about his vision of the federal government’s relationship with governors, including opposition ones, at the beginning of his term.

“This peaceful coexistence and respect for the results of the polls is extremely important. I would have no other way of responding than this. When I was governor of Goiás, I had the support of 14 mayors and governed with 246. I never discriminated against anyone for not having had support from him. So this is the republican way of governing,” said the governor, when asked by journalists about his relationship with the Lula government.

“It is logical that the state cannot survive without this joint participation with the federal government, so much so that we are here today to address a matter of extreme relevance, which is public transport in the Federal District region and surroundings”, completed.

Caiado maintained a close relationship with President Jair Bolsonaro, although there were moments of trembling. The two even broke up during the Covid-19 pandemic because they disagreed with actions to prevent transmission of the virus. The peak of the crisis between the two happened with the interview of former Minister of Health Luiz Henrique Mandetta in which he contradicted Bolsonaro’s positions, which was granted at the headquarters of the government of Goiás.

The president and the governor of Goiás later got closer, especially with the proximity of the October elections. After the first round. Caiado went to the Alvorada Palace to announce his support for the president in the second round of voting, against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Caiado was also at the same official residence days later, at a Bolsonaro event with country artists who supported him in the election.

The re-elected governor, however, has begun to make positive statements about the new government in recent months. In an interview with Sheetsaid that the PT’s initiative to promote a meeting with all 27 governors was “worthy of applause”.

“In less than 30 days, Lula schedules a meeting with all 27 governors, saying that the posture will be one of openness, that no decision will be taken without the participation of the governors, that he makes a point of being present in the states even inviting himself to go in palaces. It is an initiative worthy of applause,” he said.

At the meeting with Minister Padilha, Caiado and Celina Leão presented a proposal for the formation of a consortium to manage transport in the Federal District region and surrounding cities in Goiás, which would be subsidized by the two states and the federal government.

The two also asked for the postponement of the 40% readjustment in the rate announced by ANTT (National Land Transport Agency).
