The energy transition to renewable sources and the direction of the green economy should make up the government’s decision on oil exploration in Foz do Amazonas, say 59 leaders in a letter sent to President Lula last Thursday.

“We understand that there are explorations underway and that they will not and should not be stopped overnight – including the pre-salt. However, it is critical to have a clear and defined exit schedule”, states the letter.

The leaders claim to be concerned about “the pretext of energy security put forward by Petrobras and the socioeconomic development pointed out by local leaders” to defend oil exploration in the region.

The position advocates that the government induce new economic models. “This also implies mobilizing public administration bodies and the power of companies like Petrobras to lead, promote and coordinate such a transition”, he says.

The letter also expresses support for Ibama’s decision to deny licensing, emphasizing that the conclusion is of a technical nature.

“The Brazilian State must defend the carrying out of the Environmental Assessment of Sedimentary Areas (AAAS), foreseen in our legislation since 2012, which would avoid the exploration of ecologically sensitive areas and of difficult containment of possible accidents”, says the text.

Researchers, executives, businessmen, investment fund managers, finance consultants, environmentalists and twelve representatives of extractive reserve associations sign the position.

Of the 59 signatories, five are members of the Conselhão, the Council for Sustainable Economic and Social Development, a group linked to the Presidency with the participation of 245 directors.

Among the members of the Council, the sociologist Caio Magri, who directs the Ethos Institute for Business and Social Responsibility, signed the letter; the founder of investment holding company QMS Capital, Marcel Fukayama; the president of Fundação Tide Setubal and heiress of Banco Itaú, Neca Setubal; André Villas-Bôas, from the Board of Instituto Socioambiental and Benilda Regina Paiva de Brito, from Múcua Consultoria.

For Marcel Fukayama, the Council must position itself on strategic guidelines such as oil exploration.

On the blog, he stated that the Council’s governance is being built in the coming days and should have thematic committees. “This must express the work agenda and the themes that the Council will have to support the government to qualify its decisions and articulations”, says Fukayama.
