Abílio Diniz said he would opt for neutrality between Lula and Bolsonaro, but made donations to Bolsonarist candidates during the campaign
After Lula’s (PT) victory in the 2022 election, member of the Board of Directors of Carrefour and businessman Abílio Diniz donated around R$500,000 to the Workers’ Party. According to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), the amount was deposited in the account of the acronym on November 30 last year
Diniz declared neutrality in the dispute between Lula and Bolsonaro, but financed the campaigns of Bolsonarist candidates during the electoral race. Tarcísio de Freitas, elected governor of São Paulo, received R$ 200,000 from the businessman, while Frederico D’Avila, defeated in the race for the Chamber, took R$ 80,000. He also transferred R$ 1 million to Novo.
During the Bolsonaro government, Diniz participated in several meetings with Bolsonaro and praised Paulo Guedes’ economic policy. “I believe the president wants the best for everyone. I can talk about what I understand: economics. In this area, the work that has been done is really beautiful, and I see Bolsonaro supporting this”, said the businessman to Veja magazine, in an interview given during the pandemic, in May 2020.
With Lula’s victory, Diniz told the press that he is confident in the country’s economic growth and asked the financial market to be calm with the PT government.
