Budget reduces action for minors to preserve PAC – 12/24/2023 – Panel

Congress cut resources from programs defending the rights of children and adolescents, humanitarian reception of migrants in vulnerable situations and the granting of higher education scholarships to restore part of the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) in the 2024 Budget.
The federal government’s investment program saw resources dwindle by around R$6 billion to boost parliamentary amendments.
The value of the reduction would be greater, but, to minimize the cuts, parliamentarians agreed before the final vote on a reduction in several actions, including many social programs.
The Ministry of Human Rights alone lost 9% of its budget, or R$30.5 million. The measure reached, for example, the promotion and defense of the rights of children and adolescents (R$ 3.9 million), people with disabilities (R$ 591 thousand), elderly people (R$ 514 thousand) and LGBTQIA+ (R$ 456 thousand).
In other areas, the granting of scholarships in higher education suffered a reduction of R$40.3 million. The humanitarian reception and internalization of migrants in vulnerable situations decreased by R$ 15.9 million.
