Brazil advanced this Thursday (4th) to the round of 16 of the Boxing World Cup, in Tashkent (Uzbekistan), with Olympic medalist Abner Teixeira (over 92 kg category) and Yuri Reis (63.5 kg). There was also a successful debut today by Michael Trindade (51 kg) from Pará.
The World Cup runs until May 14. The fights take place in the morning (6:00 am and 10:00 am) and the schedule is announced the day before the fights, at 9:30 pm, on the social networks of the Brazilian Boxing Confederation (CBboxe).
Bronze at the Tokyo Games, boxer Abner Teixeira, 26, is seeking his first medal at the Worlds. Born in Osasco (SP), he debuted on the right foot, defeating Serb Vladan Babic by decision. The fight in the round of 16, scheduled for Sunday (7), will be against Georgian Nikolos Begadze.
Debutante in the World Cup, the capixaba Yuri “Hawk” kings, 20 years old, scored his second victory in the competition. Brazilian champion last year, Falcão defeated Indian Shiva Tapia, number three in the ranking, in an exciting fight. In the clash for the round of 16, probably on Saturday (6), Falcão will have another challenge. The opponent will be the Cuban Lázaro Estrada, three times world champion and three times Olympic medalist.
The day was also good for 22-year-old Michael Trindade, from Pará, who debuted at the Worlds over South Korean Jo Sehyeong. The Brazilian’s second fight will be next Tuesday (9) against Masud Yusifzada (Azerbaijan).
In addition to Abner, Yuri and Falcão, Brazil has four other athletes at the World Cup: Luiz Gabriel Oliveira (51 kg), Wanderson Oliviera (71 kg), Wanderley Pereira (80 kg) and Keno Machado (under 92 kg), runner-up world champion in 2021.
The World Cup score would be decisive in the race for an Olympic spot. However, the International Boxing Association (IBA), organizer of the competition, is suspended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which prevents it from defining the classification criteria for the Paris 2024 Games.
According to CBboxe, qualifying for Paris 2024 will take place this year at the Pan American Games in Santiago (Chile), from October 20 to November 5.
