Brazilian Women’s Championship 2023 starts this Friday

Organized by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) since 2013, the Brazilian Women’s Championship Neoenergia 2023 begins its eleventh edition this Friday (24), with sixteen teams from across the country competing.

Current three-time champion, Corinthians, which has already won the Women’s Super Cup this year, emerges as the big favorite for the tetra. On the other hand, the tendency is for a season based on balance on the part of most teams.

Played in two phases, the tournament mixes the system of consecutive points, with all sixteen teams facing each other in a single shift, with the knockout format, played by the eight best placed at the end of the first phase. The last four teams in the leaderboard end up relegated to Série A2.

Because of the World Cup to be held in Australia and New Zealand from July 20th to August 20th, the Brasileirão will be suspended for two months, from June 26th to August 26th, a fact that will allow teams to release their athletes summoned for the Worlds and do not have sporting damage with it. The break will take place after the quarterfinals and before the semifinals.

Unlike 2022, we will no longer have two broadcasters broadcasting the competition on television. Grupo Band, exclusive holder of open TV rights, did not have its contract renewed. In this way, Grupo Globo will own the rights both on open TV (Rede Globo) and on closed TV (SporTV) – the latter that has already broadcast the competition in previous years.

On the last 16th, CBF released the detailed table of the first ten rounds, with SporTV scheduled with two matches per round. To date, there is no broadcast by Rede Globo for any of the eighty opening games. Observing this situation, there is great concern about the possibility of having matches without transmission, like the remaining six of each round, not described for closed TV.

This problem is not new, since in 2022 we had a similar situation, which only ended with the agreement between the Brazilian Confederation and Eleven Sports, signed in April of that year. Through this partnership, all matches not broadcast on TV would be shown on the streaming platform for free. Before the agreement in question, it was up to each club to carry out the transmission of their games (which were not on Band or SporTV).

For 2023, the mystery remains since the entity has not yet confirmed clashes at Eleven. However, the curious thing is that when the partnership was announced, it was announced that the contract was valid for three years (2022, 2023 and 2024).

Relegated in 2021, Bahia returns to the elite and brings with it debutants Athletico Paranaense, Ceará and Real Ariquemes. Remaining from 2022, we have Atlético Mineiro, Avaí Kindermann, Corinthians, Cruzeiro, Ferroviária, Flamengo, Grêmio, Internacional, Palmeiras, Real Brasília, Santos and São Paulo. Next, brief highlights about each of the sixteen clubs – it is worth noting the tendency towards a lot of balance in the fight for the G8, which should involve most of the teams in the championship.
