Considered one of the pioneers of ice speed skating in Brazil, Gabriel Ohnmacht died this Friday (2), in the Swiss commune of Schaffhausen, at the age of 23.
The information was released on social media by his mother, Fatima Ohnmacht, who found him dead on the sofa in the apartment where he lived.
The cause of death was not disclosed, but, according to Fatima reported to the website ge, there were no apparent injuries and the forensic report did not indicate a break-in, which led the family to think that Gabriel may have suffered a heart attack.
Son of a German father and a Brazilian mother, he chose to defend Brazil in the sprint mode from 2016 onwards. “This is my sport, I don’t know how to explain it properly. I like speed and concentration and I find that in skating”, he said, to time, in an interview with the Brasil Zero Grau blog.
The following year, he helped organize the first Brazilian championship of its kind, held in the city of Inzell, Germany, where he participated in several international competitions.
According to the Brazilian Ice Sports Confederation (CBDG), Gabriel’s performance helped Brazil regain its membership in the International Skating Union (ISU).
The young man had moved away from the sport in recent years, but showed a desire to return to practicing it, his mother reported.
CBDG issued a note of condolence over the death. “On behalf of the entire ice sports community, CBDG sympathizes with his family and friends. Brazilian sports is grateful for his memorable and important legacy, and regrets his early departure.”
