Brazilian politicians support Israel after suffering attack from Iran

Brazilian authorities spoke out in support of Israel after the attack carried out by Iran on Saturday night (13). More than 200 drones and missiles were launched against Israel by Iran and, on the same date, a container ship linked to an Israeli businessman was captured by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in the Persian Gulf, on one of the world’s main trade routes.

O governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), made a post on his profile on X shortly after the attack. “My solidarity with the people of Israel, who are under air attack from Iran. The world is apprehensive about the escalation of tension and I continue to pray that a path to peace can be found as soon as possible,” he wrote.

Tarcísio has positioned himself in favor of Israel, the main gesture being the visit he made to the country in March alongside the governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (União). The diplomatic visit included meetings with Israeli officials and those affected by the conflict with Hamas.

A Senator Damares Alves (Republicans-DF) also spoke on social media on Saturday night (13), asking for prayers for those affected. “Attacks on Israel. Moments of tension. Let us pray for the protection of people”, published the senator.

The “Bolsonaro TV” page, official profile of Jair Bolsonaro (PL)posted this Sunday morning (14) a video of the former president visiting the country, with the caption “Thank you, Israel”, and tagging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Lula government’s position on Iran and Israel

O federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) also made a post on Saturday night (13), but demanding the Brazilian government to take a stand against the attack on Israel. “Hoping that the Brazilian government condemns the Iranian attacks on Israel. Unfortunately it is not easy for them, as they did not support the UN investigation against Iran for violating women’s rights”, published the parliamentarian.

On the same occasion, the federal deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) drew attention to the silence of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT): “The United States and the European Union strongly condemned Iran’s attack against Israel, while reiterating their commitment to the security of the Israeli state. Leaders of countries such as the United Kingdom The United Kingdom, France, Mexico, the Czech Republic, Denmark and Norway expressed their disapproval of Iran. Meanwhile, Lula remains silent”, posted Zambelli, stating that Lula’s position compromises Brazil’s security.

The federal deputy Rodolfo Nogueira (PL-MS) announced that it will present, on Monday (15), a motion to repudiate the Brazilian government for not having condemned the attacks perpetrated by Iran against Israel. “It is unacceptable that the Brazilian government does not condemn the Iranian attacks in light of the recent offensive against Israel. As a member of the Brazil-Israel Parliamentary Friendship Group, I was perplexed when I saw that the Itamaraty note did not contain a condemnation of Iran for the attacks,” said Nogueira.

O Itamaraty published a statement at 11pm on Saturday (13) and was criticized by the opposition for not condemning Iran’s attacks against Israel. The publication states that the “Brazilian government follows, with serious concern, reports of Iran sending drones and missiles towards Israel, putting neighboring countries such as Jordan and Syria on alert.”
