the brazilian Yago Mateus, point guard for the Brazilian basketball team and Ratiopharm Ulm (Germany), suffered racist abuse from fans of Joventut Badalona (Spain) in a match valid for the EuroCup 2022/2023 group stage, played last Tuesday (7) at Palau Municipal d’Esports of Badalona.
During the last quarter of the game, a supporter of the Spanish team called the Brazilian a mono (monkey in Spanish), an offense that was followed by laughter from people around the offender. The images were captured by the official transmission of the game.
“Thank God I didn’t hear it at the time, because I don’t know what my reaction would be. I had never been through this in my life, a situation like this, neither in Brazil nor in other countries where I played with my clubs and with the Brazilian national team. I cannot understand the reason for this. It is revolting and sad to see that this happens, it is a recurring thing in sport, in today’s world, and we are still a long way from awareness and understanding that there is no room for this type of attitude”, declared the player, this Wednesday (8), through his press office.
The team that manages the career of Yago informed, through a note, that he contacted the German club to trigger the EuroCup to ask for the appropriate sanctions.
The Brazilian Basketball Confederation (CBB) said in a note that “vehemently repudiates the crime of racism committed against the athlete Yago dos Santos” and that the fact that the crime was recorded on video facilitates the identification of the aggressors. “The CBB asks that the Spanish authorities act with the rigor of the law and that crimes like this no longer go unpunished”he concluded.
