Brazil secured a spot in the first esports event organized by the IOC (International Olympic Committee). The committee announced last Wednesday (1st) that the game “Tennis Clash”, developed by the Brazilian studio Wildlife, will represent tennis at Olympic Esports Week, to be held from June 22 to 25 in Singapore.
In the title, the user controls a tennis player and needs to beat opponents by dragging their finger on the screen in the direction they want to send the ball. It is a game that, like traditional tennis, requires strategy and precision in movements.
“‘Tennis Clash’ is constantly working to ensure that the experience is as close to a real tennis match as possible, combined with the challenge of an arcade gaming experience. It is an honor for Wildlife, as a global company, to be part of Olympic Esports Series”, said Wildlife in a note sent to the report.
As it is a casual game (which is aimed at people who do not usually spend long hours playing video games), their presence at an esports event of this magnitude may seem unusual. Even more so with the absence of billionaire electronic sports franchises such as “CS:GO”, “League of Legends” and “Fortnite”.
This situation is easily explained when taking into account the role the IOC believes e-sports should play in its entry into the Olympic family.
“Our main motivation is to look for ways to convince people playing these games to do the real thing”, said Thomas Bach at the 137th IOC meeting, in March 2021, when the committee unanimously approved the resolution that opened the organization to esports .
From this perspective, “Tennis Clash” seems the ideal title to attract new players. The game is easy to play, available for free to a wide audience (you just need a cell phone with Android or iOS) and enables exciting competitions.
Another concern of the IOC is not to include in its events games that could be considered violent. This removes games like “CS:GO” and “Fortnite” from Olympic competitions, shooting games with representation of physical aggression and murder.
“We have a clear red line. We don’t want to deal with any games that are contrary to Olympic values,” Bach said. “Any game where violence is glorified or accepted, where there is any kind of discrimination, has nothing to do with Olympic values.”
With that, most of the list of games present at the event is made up of titles that emulate real sports. In addition to tennis, 8 other sports will be present at Olympic Esports Week, 4 of which have already been part of the Olympic Virtual Series, the first esports event with the IOC seal, held virtually in June 2021:
motor racing
“Gran Tourism 7”, the latest game in the well-known series of racing games, will replace “Gran Tourism Sport” as the motorsport representative at the IOC event. Polyphony Digital’s game is exclusive to PlayStation consoles.
Baseball
Another modality that made its debut on the Olympic scene in 2021, baseball will be played with the game “WBSC eBaseball: Power Pros”, by Konami. The title, which features cartoon-style characters, is available for Switch and PlayStation consoles.
Cycling
The sport will be played with “Zwift”, a platform used for indoor cycling training. In it, the user cycles through virtual scenarios while equipment attached to his bicycle simulates the resistance that the cyclist would face in a real environment. The modality was also present in the 2021 Olympic Virtual Series.
Dance
Just as breaking will debut at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, dance appears for the first time in the virtual version of the Games. The modality will be played under the title “Just Dance 2023 Edition”, by Ubisoft. In the game, the player needs to imitate a choreography presented on the screen. The precision and synchronization of the movements are captured by cameras or sensors attached to the competitor’s body, which receives a score at the end of the song. The game is available for Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S
Taekwondo
The “virtual taekwondo” tournament will use a unique platform developed by Refract Technologies. It reads the fighter’s punches with motion sensors, enabling non-contact fighting competition. The championship will count with the participation of fighters invited by the international confederation of the sport.

The modality will be represented by the game “Tic Tac Bow”, available for Android devices. The game is a multiplayer game that mixes the accuracy of archery with the well-known game of tic-tac-toe.
Candle
Also present at the 2021 virtual event, the modality will be played with the game “Virtual Regatta”, available for internet browsers and mobile devices. Two categories will be contested at the event, one that simulates offshore races, lasting 30 days, and another with events similar to the Olympic regattas.
Chess
Boasting one of the largest chess communities in the world, the chess.com platform will be used for the virtual IOC competition. The qualifying stage starts on the 20th, but Brazil will not be able to count on the participation of youtuber and chess player Felipe Neto, who was banned from the platform for cheating during a match.
