Brazil rejects anti-gender identity declaration at the UN – 03/30/2023 – Panel
[ad_1]
Brazil rejected two recommendations made last year within the scope of the UN Human Rights Council that supported positions in defense of the traditional concept of family and against gender identities.
The texts were proposed by Egypt and Russia and were part of the Universal Periodic Review that the country underwent in November last year. In the view of the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government, they did not recognize the plurality and diversity of the Brazilian population.
In addition, Brazil also signed a declaration proposed by Argentina in defense of the recognition of gender self-identification.
“With this new position, Brazil demonstrates to the world that it is willing to guide the human rights of all people”, said the national secretary of the Rights of LGBTQIA+ People of the Ministry of Human Rights, Symmy Larrat.
The decisions are part of the shift in Brazilian diplomacy in the area of human rights, reversing conservative positions expressed during the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
