With a lot of sweat, the Brazilian women’s volleyball team overcame obstacles – on and off the court – to beat Japan, host of the Pre-Olympic, by 3 sets to 2, in Tokyo, this Sunday (24), and seal their place at the Paris Olympics next year.
As this was the last of the seven rounds of the tournament, everything would be decided in a direct duel between Brazil and Japan, who arrived with identical campaigns (five wins and one defeat). Whoever won would take the Olympic spot.
The Brazilians faced the opposing fans, who filled the gym. More than 10 thousand voices screamed against Brazil. In the first set, Zé Roberto Guimarães’ team prevailed and won 25 to 21, gaining confidence for the rest of the match.
The Japanese won the second half 25-22 and were in control of the third, when they were two points away from winning by leading 23-21. However, Brazil reacted in the final stretch and won the set 27-25.
The fourth set was dominated by Japan, which won easily by 25 to 15, setting the stage for a fifth and decisive set. In the tie-break, the Brazilians were better and closed 15 to 10, emerging victorious from a battle that lasted two hours and 19 minutes.
The joy and relief for qualifying in such adverse conditions were accompanied by the emotion of the athletes and coach Zé Roberto, who had to deal with the unexpected loss of their former teammate Walewska, who died on Thursday (21).
Pointer Gabi, once again, was the main scorer of the duel, with 23 points. Brazil is now looking for its third Olympic gold, after those won in Beijing, in 2008 (when Waleswska was part of the campaign) and London, in 2012.
In Tokyo, the Brazilians ended up with silver, defeated in the decision by the United States.
