The first public hearing for the federal inclusion of cannabis on the list of medicines made available by the SUS (Sistema Único de Saúde) takes place this Thursday (20), starting at 9 am, at the Federal Senate, in Brasília. The initiative is due to PL 89/2023, authored by Senator Paulo Paim (PT-RS). The proposal was registered shortly after Governor Tarcísio de Freitas sanctioned a law allowing free distribution in the state. “If São Paulo can, why can’t the rest of the country?” said the senator, justifying the initiative.

“It is not possible that patients without resources continue to depend on a judicial decision to have access to the medicine, while the rich travel and buy at more reasonable prices”. Paim is referring to the high cost of CBD oil (cannabidiol, a substance derived from the plant with a therapeutic effect), sold in Brazilian pharmacies. Anvisa has already authorized the sale of 25 Cannabis-based products. It is estimated that 187,400 Brazilians are treated with CBD. A 30 ml glass of CBD at the drugstore can reach R$ 1,200.

Organized by the CDH (Commission on Human Rights), the meeting will be interactive, broadcast live on the e-citizenship portal. Below is the list of guests who confirmed their presence.
