Botafogo assembles judo team

With a tradition in football and rowing, Botafogo has now also reached the mats, with Botafogo Judô, formed by the union of three traditional schools of the sport in Rio de Janeiro: Judô Clube União, Judô Jomar Carneiro and Academia Projeção.
In addition to the headquarters, in General Severiano, in the neighborhood of Botafogo, the team will also have centers in Vigário Geral and Bento Ribeiro, both in the north zone; in Copacabana, in the south zone; and in Barra da Tijuca, west zone.
With more than 90 affiliates, Botafogo Judô will officially debut in competitions in the Opening Tournament of the Judo Federation of the State of Rio de Janeiro, scheduled for March 18th and 19th. The team enrolled more than 40 athletes to represent the black and white flag.
The coaches responsible for leading the team are senseis Jomar, Marcelo Almeida, Gabriel Cardozo and João de Deus.
“We are very excited for this season. We know that the beginning is difficult, but we are confident that we will be one of the strengths of judo in our state”, declared sensei Jomar. “Our technical team has experience, has diversity among the technicians and alignment in the group’s decisions. Sensei Marcelo Almeida points out the strength of the union of the three teams with history in judo as a differential for the team that was just born; and sensei Gabriel Cardozo highlights the support of the club and its president, Durcesio Mello, and the structure, which has a 200m² dojo at the headquarters, in addition to a room for physical preparation with state-of-the-art equipment.
“I am very confident in the classification of several athletes for the Brazilian Regional Championship, which will take place in April in Vitória-ES”, projected Cardozo.
