The Boston Marathon has just lost its official mascot. Spencer, a 13-year-old Golden Retriever, died last Friday (17) from liver cancer, diagnosed in September last year.
For nine years, Spencer held up motivational plaques and flags for athletes participating in the race. In 2018, her image conquered the world in an especially difficult edition of the marathon, which took place under heavy rain.
In 2022, the Boston Athletic Association named Spencer the official dog of the 126th edition of the marathon, in an official ceremony held at a hotel near the finish line, in the center of the city.
“We are devastated to share the news that Spencer has left us. We received an incredible gift in 2009 and had to return that gift last Friday. Spencer died at our home with a veterinarian in attendance,” wrote Rich Powers, owner of Spencer, on her Instagram account.
