Bolsonaro’s security defense criticizes Moraes in request for his release – 05/14/2023 – Panel

The defense of Sérgio Cordeiro, arrested in a Federal Police operation, criticized Minister Alexandre de Moraes (Federal Supreme Court) in a request for the magistrate to reconsider his decision on the preventive detention of former President Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) advisor.

Cordeiro, who worked on Bolsonaro’s security team, was the subject of an arrest warrant as part of an investigation into alleged fraud in vaccination cards in the Ministry of Health system.

According to the PF, the targets of the investigation are suspected of inserting false information about vaccination against Covid-19 between November 2021 and December 2022 so that beneficiaries could issue a vaccination certificate to travel to the United States.

In the regimental grievance, lawyers Christiano Kuntz and Eduardo Kuntz manifest “defence insurgency” by delivering the petition directly to Moraes, who justified the measure by the participation of a deputy —Gutemberg Reis (MDB-RJ)— in the alleged scheme. They ask that the petition be redistributed.

The lawyers also complain that they only had access to all the documents in the case against Cordeiro after the custody hearing, compromising the ample defense, the contradictory and due process of law. Because of this, they demand the annulment of the hearing.

They also say that “there is no element in the file to concretely justify the decree of preventive detention” of Cordeiro. Therefore, they ask for the reconsideration and revocation of the preventive detention decreed. If maintained, the lawyers request that the appeal be sent immediately to the Supreme Court.

In addition to Cordeiro, an arrest warrant was issued for Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, the former president’s right-hand man, Luis Marcos dos Reis, former aide-de-camp, Max Guilherme de Moura, Bolsonaro’s security guard, Ailton Moraes Barros, candidate the state deputy for the PL-RJ in 2022, and João Carlos de Sousa Brecha, secretary of the City Hall of Duque de Caxias (RJ).
