Bolsonaro’s foreign policy was childish, says minister – 08/04/2023 – Panel

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, said that diplomacy during the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) had “childish” attitudes in relations with other countries.
“I sought to return to principles dear to Brazilian foreign policy that had been set aside in recent years. These fundamentals were replaced, in the previous administration, by aggressive rhetoric and even childish attitudes towards countries whose rulers had a political and ideological orientation different from that of the government previous year”, he said, in an interview to the Cebri (Brazilian Center for International Relations) magazine in March.
According to Vieira, the sectarianism of the Bolsonaro government represents the negation of diplomacy. “Anti-diplomacy has nothing to do with Brazilian tradition,” he said.
One of the countries with which relations cooled under Bolsonaro was Argentina, governed by a leftist president, Alberto Fernández.
