Bolsonaro warns of the risk of overtaxing the tax reform leading to communism

Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) expressed again this Sunday (23) through his Twitter profile his critical opinion on the tax reform approved in the Chamber, highlighting risks with the so-called selective taxes provided for in the project. For him, the idea of surcharging goods and services considered harmful to health and the environment can have serious consequences, such as inflation, unemployment and shortages.
“More than still obscure points, such as the absence of a base rate or operational details of the division of taxes between federal entities, the reform also allows the president (the one who is proud to be called a communist) to surcharge everything he deems to be harmful to health or the planet”, he posted.
The text approved by the Chamber on July 6, currently being analyzed by senators, establishes the creation of a selective tax that will be levied on the production, sale or importation of goods and services harmful to health or the environment, without specifying which items would be affected. Bolsonaro expressed on the social network his concern about this surcharge reaching agricultural inputs, making food more expensive. According to the approved text, the standard rate would be 40%.
Bolsonaro also claims that the reform could make transport more expensive by raising the price of fuel, which will have a specific tax regime and a uniform rate. “This surcharge, without passing through Congress, may be as much higher as the government deems, or needs, so. Inflation, unemployment and shortages would disrupt the economy, opening the doors to the dreamed communism”, he said.
The former president positioned himself against the vote on the reform and guided his allied deputies in that direction, diverging from the favorable stance of the Republicans, particularly Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, the Progressistas and even part of the PL. Twenty of the 99 deputies from Bolsonaro’s party voted yes to the text.
