Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who will assume the chair of honorary president of the party starting next week, says he will work so that the party and allies can elect at least 60% of the mayors in the municipal elections of 2024.
The statement was given shortly after arriving in Brazil this Thursday (30), at the headquarters of the PL in Brasília, coming from an 89-day trip to the United States. In a speech reserved for supporters and allies, Bolsonaro said he will receive leaders, parliamentarians and other politicians and that the focus now is to travel the country to prepare for next year’s election.
“It is not just PL to create city halls. It is together with the PP and other parties to collaborate for us to make 60% of the city halls in Brazil”, he said.
Bolsonaro said he is proud to return to the country and that he depends on the parliamentarians in Congress to maintain the legacy he built at the head of the presidency. According to him, the election of “practically 20% of the benches” of the PL and allied parties forms the “majority within Congress. We want the best for our country. I am sure that you will lead Brazil to a safe haven”.
He also criticized the current government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and said that “doing what you want [com] the future of our nation.” “[Enquanto estive nos Estados Unidos] it gave us a better view of our country from the outside. It was a learning experience, a follow-up of what happens here”, he added, saying that the North American country is the “Brazilian state that worked”.
“Everything there is what we want to implement here too, [como] freedom of expression, private property, the issue of crime, the legitimate right to defense, and what is most important: the freedom for people to be able to work, express themselves and live their lives”, he said.
Bolsonaro also said that there were days when he received hundreds of people to talk to, and that the people there “want the best for our country”.
“All of us here left a mark on our country, our green and yellow flag, discussing politics with a capital P, with knowledge on the part of the people of how each power works, responsibility, among other things. Brazil will succeed”, he concluded.
Shortly after speaking on arrival at the PL headquarters, Bolsonaro entered a private meeting with party members and allies, such as federal deputies Filipe Barros (PL-PR) and Evair de Melo (PP-ES), former minister João Roma , between others. Interlocutors claim that the theme of the meeting was the articulation of parliamentarians linked to the former president in Congress.
There is still no closed agenda for travel around the country, but the expectation is that the caravan will start in the Northeast region, according to interlocutors linked to Valdemar Costa Neto, president of the PL.
