Bolsonaro tries illusion trick to return to Brazil – 02/15/2023 – Bruno Boghossian

After performing a disappearance act at the end of last year, Jair Bolsonaro is preparing yet another illusionism trick. By announcing that he intends to return to Brazil in March to act as leader of the opposition to Lula, the former president showed that he would like to convince the country to forget some of its crimes.

Bolsonaro’s interview with The Wall Street Journal appeared to be part of an effort to revamp some of his acts in power. Before stepping onto Brazilian soil, the former president tried to undo connections with the January 8 coup d’état, adjusted the tone of attacks on the election and simulated deliberation when revisiting his management of the pandemic.

Bolsonaro’s statements could be interpreted as a kind of prior defense on three issues that pose some of the greatest threats to his electoral strength, his political rights and, ultimately, his freedom.

In the interview, Bolsonaro repeated a tactic from the last campaign and said that if he had to lead the country again in the pandemic, he “would not say anything” and would leave the matter in the hands of the Ministry of Health.

Allies are convinced that the former president’s conduct during that period was one of the main reasons for his defeat in 2022 and believe that he needs to get rid of that weight to preserve his electoral career. In addition, criminal investigations into Bolsonaro’s activities became a greater risk after he lost the special forum.

The former president also wanted to disguise his history of attacking the elections and stated that he only criticizes the process for considering it partial. “I’m not saying there was fraud,” he declared, after years of talking about fraud. To disassociate himself from the Bolsonarist coup attempt, he claimed that “he wasn’t even there” and added that “they” want to blame him.

Bolsonaro must know that he cannot deceive Justice with these disguises. “An arrest warrant can come out of nowhere,” he vented. Still, he will try to pose as the underdog to maintain political support.
