Bolsonaro says that the PGR’s request for data from his followers concerns ‘exercise of freedom’ – 07/17/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

The defense of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) says that it causes “great concern with the exercise of freedom” the fact that the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) asked the Federal Supreme Court (STF) that social network companies send a file with the complete list and identification data of all the former president’s followers.

The request was made within the scope of the inquiry that investigates coup acts of January 8. The rapporteur is Minister Alexandre de Moraes.

The PGR also requests that the platforms where Bolsonaro has an account, such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, present a dossier with his posts referring to elections, electronic voting machines, the Armed Forces and the STF.

The defense of the former head of the Excetivo states, in a note, that he “never incited, induced or participated” in the episode.

“It causes, however, kind and great concern with the exercise of freedom of thought and opinion, that it is intended to require the servers that provide social networks to send the complete list and respective identification data of all their followers on social networks”, says lawyer Paulo da Cunha Bueno.

“Such information does not have any logical connection with the fact under investigation – about which the president has already given statements, clarifying all the circumstances -, being an unacceptable and absurd attempt at political monitoring”, he further states.

In addition, the PGR asks that a copy of the video published by Bolsonaro be sent, two days after the invasion of the headquarters of the three Powers, with attacks on the security of electronic voting machines. At the time, the post was deleted shortly thereafter.

The former president had to provide clarification because of the post and told Federal Police investigators that he was under the influence of medication at the time.

Deputy Attorney General of the Republic Carlos Frederico Santos, responsible for the investigations, points out that the request had already been made, but that it was not analyzed by Minister Alexandre Moraes. Therefore, he reiterated the request this Monday (17).

The PGR also wants companies to report the number of views, likes, shares, comments and other measurable metrics of Bolsonaro’s posts.

The purpose of the request, according to the deputy prosecutor, is to obtain “concrete data” that can “support an objective analysis of the reach of messages, videos and other manifestations published by the former president of the Republic on social networks”.
