Bolsonaro: 5 points for not forgetting scams and lies – 06/29/2023 – Politics

The trial that could make Jair Bolsonaro (PL) ineligible could end this Thursday (29). The session is scheduled for 9 am.

The court has seven ministers. Three of them are also from the STF (Federal Supreme Court), two from the STJ (Superior Court of Justice) and two from the legal profession.

Last Tuesday (27), when voting for Bolsonaro’s ineligibility, Minister Benedito Gonçalves, rapporteur for the action, said that the former president trivialized the coup, encouraged a collective paranoia with the attacks against the electoral system and acted to demonstrate a symbiosis with the Armed Forces.

The minister traced in his vote to condemn Bolsonaro the coup escalation from the 2021 lives with the attacks on electronic voting machines, through the meeting with ambassadors and the post-election attacks, to the draft of the coup found with former minister Anderson Torres.

Remember how Bolsonaro, nostalgic for the military dictatorship (1964-1985), flirted with the coup d’état and made statements against democracy throughout his presidency, and how the meeting with ambassadors, in July 2022, was not an isolated case.

1) Attacks on ballot boxes and the TSE

Throughout his term, the president’s main confrontational strategy was to question the security of electronic voting machines, a system used since 1996 and considered efficient and reliable by authorities and specialists in the country.

He never presented evidence or evidence to question the polls, but repeated the coup speech, seen as an attempt to hide the government’s problems, the high disapproval and the polls that placed him behind today’s President Lula (PT).

2) Attacks on STF ministers

The STF was Bolsonaro’s preferred target throughout his term. He used terms like “politicalha”, “it’s over, damn”, connection with PT, activism and militancy, in attacks that intensified from 2020, with the Covid-19 pandemic.

In March 2022, at the same ceremony in Planalto, he defended the military dictatorship and told STF ministers to shut up.

3) Praise for dictatorship

Nostalgia for the military dictatorship (1964-1985), Bolsonaro reiterated over the years his authoritarian tendency and his disapproval of the democratic regime. He denied the existence of a dictatorship in Brazil and said he was in favor of “an exceptional regime”, stating that “by voting you will not change anything in this country”.

In an interview in 1999, when he was still a deputy, the politician expressly said that, if he were president, he would close Congress. “There is no doubt about it, it would be a coup on the same day! It doesn’t work! And I’m sure that at least 90% of the population would celebrate, clap their hands, because it doesn’t work,” he said.

Already in the Presidency, in 2021, he hinted that he could not do everything he would like because of the democratic pillars. “Some think I can do everything. If everything had to depend on me, this would not be the regime we would be living in. And despite everything, I represent democracy in Brazil,” he said at a cadet graduation.

Before that, throughout 2020, Bolsonaro participated in demonstrations that advocated a military coup.

4) September 7 scammer

On September 7, 2021, in speeches before thousands of supporters in Brasília and São Paulo, Bolsonaro made coup threats against the STF, urged disobedience to court decisions and said that he would only leave the Presidency of the Republic dead.

On September 7, 2022, in front of thousands of supporters at the Esplanada dos Ministérios, he spoke in a threatening tone against other Powers, with a critical citation of the STF.

5) Institutional crisis of 2021

Bolsonaro maintained during his term a speech in which, without any proof, he raised doubts about the electoral system. On several occasions, he has hinted that he would accept no outcome other than his re-election. This caused a strong institutional crisis in 2021.

The strongest threat occurred in July of that year. “Next year’s elections will be clean. Either we hold clean elections in Brazil or we don’t have elections,” he told supporters.

The next day, he reinforced the threat and stated that electoral fraud was in the TSE. Bolsonaro also attacked the then president of the electoral court and minister of the STF, Luís Roberto Barroso, whom he called an “idiot” and “imbecile”.

“The fraud is in the TSE, so there is no doubt. This was done in 2014”, declared the representative, repeating the unfounded accusation that the then candidate Aécio Neves (PSDB) had won the election against former president Dilma Rousseff (PT ).
