Bolsonaristas praise El Salvador’s hard-line president – 04/30/2023 – Panel

The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has become the new idol for Bolsonaristas, who have applauded his policies to combat violence based on repressive measures.
In February, Bukele inaugurated the largest prison in Latin America, with a capacity for 40,000 inmates. Violence rates have dropped in the country, but human rights organizations point to cases of arrest and murder of innocents, among other abuses.
The Salvadoran leader has also been attacking institutions, especially the country’s Supreme Court.
These actions aroused the interest of allies of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). His son Eduardo submitted an application to the Public Security Commission of the Chamber to carry out a technical visit to the newly opened mega-prison.
Another Bolsonarist deputy, Osmar Terra (MDB-RS), approved the holding of a public hearing by videoconference with the Salvadoran Minister of Justice and Public Security, Gustavo Villatoro. The session would take place this Tuesday (25), but was postponed.
“If current trends continue, El Salvador could become one of the safest countries in the world, with the arrest of over 61,000 people, including gang members and suspected collaborators,” Terra says in her application.
