Bolsonarismo seeks display of strength in Senate election – 01/28/2023 – Bruno Boghossian

At the end of November, Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) called leaders of his party, the PP and the Republicans to a meeting. The son of the then president began to count votes to try to elect Rogério Marinho (PL) to command the Senate. The platform was clear: install a parliamentarian willing to face the Supreme Court at the head of Congress.

In recent days, Marinho gained the formal support of the trio of parties that formed the core of the Jair Bolsonaro government. His candidacy for the presidency of the Senate represents a search for survival by Bolsonarism.

The plan is to gain power to defend the group’s agendas, but also to make a display of sufficient strength to maintain cohesion on the right and offer an alternative pole to congressmen from the center harassed by the Lula government.

Bolsonaro’s allies know that life in the opposition is tough. They lack public funds to satisfy their electoral bases, spotlights to obtain political gains and power to influence the country’s agenda.

Marinho’s candidacy is treated like an oxygen tank both by Bolsonarists who want access to public coffers and by those who seek to keep the coup d’état alive or defend ultraconservative agendas. Even if it fails, the group hopes to show that it has about 30 seats in the Senate to disrupt the government (mainly in voting on PECs) or to pressure Lula for bargains.

Despite the movements of this group, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD) is still a favorite for re-election. The current president of the Senate uses the sharing of benefits to parliamentarians in the last two years and the rejection of the coup agenda to his advantage.

Still, Pacheco’s allies avoid going up in the jump. Proof of this is that the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro (PSD), is considering leaving office on the 1st to return to the Senate and vote for re-election. The reason is that his alternate, Margareth Buzzetti (PSD), campaigned for Jair Bolsonaro. The group fears that she will support Marinho in a close vote.
