The Minister of Social Development, Wellington Dias, stated this Wednesday (20) that Bolsa Família cannot be considered definitive support for the beneficiaries. The program is one of the main social programs of the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
According to Dias, Bolsa Família “is not a job, it is not a definitive solution”, but “emergency and social assistance”. The minister also added that the aid is so that “no person is in a situation where they are unable to eat, drink coffee, lunch and dinner”. “Brazil’s preference was for income transfer. Having a single registry that is always up to date”, said Dias, in an interview with Power 360.
According to the government, the program currently has 20.9 million families covered by Bolsa Família. The PT program was relaunched by Lula in March this year, with new rules for including beneficiaries. In April, access to the benefit was blocked by the government for 1.2 million people who registered in the second half of last year.
When questioned by Power 360 Regarding the budget for benefits, Dias informed that Lula’s orientation is “not to lack” money for the social area. The ministry will have the 2nd largest resource (R$281.7 billion) from Esplanada in 2024.
