The new Bolsa Família, re-launched by the federal government to replace Auxílio Brasil, starts paying average benefits of R$715 to 20.8 million beneficiaries as of the 20th of this month. Currently, the average value is just over R$ 600.

The program was relaunched in a ceremony at the Planalto Palace by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), this Thursday morning (2). The minimum amount to be released is R$ 600. There will also be an additional R$ 150 per child up to six years old in school, in addition to an additional amount for children between six and 18 years old.

According to the president of Caixa Econômica Federal, Maria Rita Serrano, the program will distribute debit cards to all users, who will be able to use them for purchases and other payments.

It has not yet been disclosed how this replacement will be carried out, but the president of Caixa informed that the bank is preparing to, from the 20th, provide assistance to the public in all branches and bank correspondents of Caixa.

According to her, in 2003, when the program started, it served 3 million Brazilians. Today, it reaches almost 21 million. Last month, Bolsa Família, still called Auxílio Brasil, paid benefits to around 21 million Brazilians. The decrease in the total number of beneficiaries is due to cuts after investigating irregularities in the registration.

Rules for receiving Bolsa Família

According to Minister Wellington Dias, of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger, a higher benefit amount will be paid because the government takes into account the number of family members. However, families of a single person should continue with R$ 600, since, according to him, there will be no reduction in the minimum amount.

“Bolsa Familia is not just income transfer, Bolsa Familia is a life policy, for a better life”, said Dias in his speech.

Who can receive:

  • To have Bolsa Família, you must be in CadÚnico
  • All families with an income of up to half a minimum wage (R$ 651 today, but should rise to R$ 660 with the promised readjustment of the minimum wage for May) are eligible for CadÚnico.
  • Families with a per capita income (per person) of R$ 218 are entitled to Bolsa Família

In his speech, President Lula asked that society as a whole be inspected so that citizens who do not comply with the rules and are not entitled to the benefit are removed from the program. “Because if there’s someone who doesn’t deserve it, that someone won’t get it,” he said.

Readjustment in the value per person in the family

The government announced that the new program will include families with an income of up to R$218 per person —an increase in relation to the poverty line, which was up to R$210 per person in the family.

The 3.81% readjustment is below the 7.12% inflation accumulated since December 2021, when the law that created the Brazil Aid and instituted the BRL 210 per person was sanctioned.

The measure will allow more families to be eligible to receive the benefit. There is, however, expectation to keep the queue zero until the end of the year.

For this year, the federal government will have a ceiling of R$ 175 billion to allocate to the new Bolsa Família. The amount is higher than the budget approved last year, but it became possible after the approval of a PEC (Proposed Amendment to the Constitution) articulated by Lula’s team, still in the transition period.
