BNDES stops credit to ruralist who caused environmental damage – 11/30/2023 – Panel SA

The BNDES board approved, this Thursday (30), new rules prohibiting rural owners with “environmental debts” from taking out loans from the bank. The new guideline must be implemented in agencies within twenty days.

The measure is part of a new socio-environmental positioning of the institution which, under Lula’s management, wants to accelerate investments related to the green economy.

Previously, a rural owner requested a line of credit through a company. In this way, BNDES ran the risk of releasing resources if another company in the same economic group had been fined for environmental damage, for example.

From now on, searches will be carried out using the borrower’s document. The bank will carry out corporate cross-checks to check if there are any registered liabilities.

According to the bank, the contracting can only be authorized if effective measures are adopted to regularize the embargo, in compliance with the requirements established in environmental legislation.

Under the current rule, BNDES does not grant credit to projects located in areas with records of illegal deforestation. Verification is done using satellites (MapBiomas).
