BNDES almost quadruples credit for family farming in the North and Northeast – 07/11/2023 – Panel

The BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) will apply R$ 1.2 billion in credit to Pronaf (National Family Farming Program) in the North and Northeast regions, an increase of 277% compared to the total for the past harvest.
Mediation will be carried out mainly by credit cooperatives, which will make BNDES resources available to family farmers in these regions.
As the Panel showed, the BNDES increased by more than 100% the resources it invests in family farming in the Safra Plan. In the 2022/2023 cycle, it was R$ 5.7 billion, while in 2023/2024 it will be R$ 11.6 billion, with annual rates between 0.5% and 5% per year.
In 2022, during the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) administration, Pronaf was cut by 35% of its resources, which generated mobilization of small rural producers.
“We are putting our own resources into this year’s Crop Plan with an extremely competitive interest rate. This sector has a decisive responsibility. At least 1/4 of the economy’s growth today comes, directly or indirectly, from the Brazilian countryside, which can produce more and more more without deforesting, preserving and showing the world that, in addition to being efficient and modern, we have an agriculture that contributes to fighting the greenhouse effect”, says Aloizio Mercadante, president of BDNES.
Family farming is practiced on 77% of the country’s productive properties, which corresponds to 23% of the agricultural area, and guarantees income and food for 10 million Brazilians, according to the most recent IBGE Agricultural Census, for 2017. production value of this type of planting, however, is lower than that achieved in large properties, representing 23% of the total.
