The first half ended with a meager 1-0, a goal scored close to the referee’s whistle that would take both teams to the halftime break.

In the second half, the unexpected happened: Liverpool started to score goals in front of their fans, at Anfield stadium, and Manchester United, surrendering little by little, scored a 7-0.

Not even the most optimistic Reds fan could have expected such an advantage in the biggest derby in English football. He must have pinched himself to discover that what had only been an exciting dream was real. He discovered, happily, that he was daydreaming.

As for the Red Devils fan, he found himself in the opposite situation. He pinched himself to wake up from the worst possible nightmare, but the agony only grew and the awakening did not come, since he was already awake.

Goals by Salah (2), Darwin Núnez (2), Gakpo (2) and Roberto Firmino resulted in the widest score in the nearly 130-year history of matches between Liverpool and Man United.

In 1895, precisely in the first meeting between the clubs, Liverpool ran over the visitor by 7 to 1. The greatest defeat of the Manchester team in the confrontation was in 1928, a 6 to 1.

I can imagine the joy the Liverpool fan must be feeling right now, as well as the pain of the Man United fan’s humiliation.

The rivalry is huge, and I was able to prove it when watching, in 2010, at the crowded Old Trafford stadium, a Manchester United x Liverpool.

The home team started winning 2-0, two goals from the Bulgarian Berbatov (the second in a half-bicycle), but Liverpool ran after, scoring a penalty and another free kick.

Both goals were scored by the idol Steven Gerrard, who, upon equalizing, shot towards the small but excited Liverpool crowd, showing the five fingers of his open right hand, a reference to the number of titles that Liverpool had at the time in the Champions League, against opponent’s three.

It was a clear provocation to the owners of the house. The message was passed on, but that day Gerrard and company returned to Liverpool with their heads down, as Berbatov scored one more to clinch his hat-trick and Man United’s 3-2 victory.

Liverpool’s surprising and monstrous thrashing this Sunday (5) brings curiosity about the most dilated scores in other classics of extreme rivalry in the world.
