At the age of 26, Beatriz Haddad Maia already faces the task of being a reference for the new generation of tennis players in Brazil. This Tuesday, the number 1 in the country admitted that rising in the ranking brought new responsibilities and “new commitments” to her career. At the same time that she wins the showcase of world tennis, she dreams bigger and aims for the Top 10 of the WTA ranking.
“My goal now is to be in the Top 10. This is my goal and I’m working hard to achieve it”, declared the tennis player, who also admits dreaming of an Olympic medal at the Paris Games, next year. She currently occupies the 14th position of the WTA, two above her own record, which is also the best mark of a Brazilian tennis player in the singles ranking in history.
While dreaming of being in the Top 10, Bia lives the benefits and challenges of being among the 20 best in the world. “I keep working the same, nothing changes. My motivation is the same, my will to improve is the same. There are days when it’s more difficult, but I remember that it’s not just about me, and that today I represent and can motivate a lot more people for having greater visibility and that motivates me.”
The role of reference and mirror of the new generation is one of the tennis player’s new tasks. “Because I’m in the Top 20, I have more responsibility and more commitments,” she said, during an event by Rede Tênis Brasil (RTB), the team that is her base in Brazil. The team has younger tennis players, who look to Bia for motivation.
“Girls and young women who believe and dream are seeing that it is possible (to stand out on the circuit). If we are there today, in four or five girls, it is because this path is possible. We are opening doors for new generations. That’s the message for them. And I think it’s also a merit of us, of each one, with their team, because tennis is very tough. They all have their history and go through many difficulties.”
In addition to Bia, Brazil has Laura Pigossi and Luisa Stefani, Olympic medalists in the doubles in Tokyo, standing out on the circuit. Laura has been hanging around the Top 100 in singles since last year, while Luisa is recovering in the doubles list, with her eyes on the Top 10.
“The moment for Brazilian women’s tennis is special and everyone has their responsibility in their area, doing their best for tennis. I’m trying to do my part and, if each one pulls the other up, we’ll be better. I know that there is a lot to improve. I believe that everything is born as we plant. In what is in my control, I would like to help in this transformation of women’s tennis”, he said.
