Bia Haddad made history this Wednesday by qualifying for the semifinals of Roland Garros after achieving a heroic comeback over the Tunisian Ons Jabeur, number 7 in the world.
After losing the first set by 6 to 3, the Brazilian won the tight second set – 7 to 6(5) – and did not take notice of the opponent in the third, which closed at 6 to 1.
Bia Haddad thus became the first Brazilian to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam since Maria Esther Bueno did the same at the 1968 US Opentwo years after reaching that same stage at Roland Garros, before the start of the so-called “open era”.
The world number 14 was not among the favorites for the tournament, but she showed a lot of determination with four consecutive comebacks on her way to the Paris semi-final.
The last one was against a Jabeur who arrived in great shape and with very high expectations after having played in the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open last year.
At the age of 27, and without ever having passed the second round in a Grand Slam, the Brazilian will dispute a place in the final against the winner of the duel between the Polish Iga Swiatek, number 1 in the world, and the American Coco Gauff, sixth in the ranking.
