Barreado is among the most popular meat and bacon dishes

As good people from Paraná, we know that Barreado is delicious. The good news is that the world seems to agree with us. The typical dish from the coast of Paraná is less popular. Last week, Barreado appeared in third place in the TasteAtlas ranking among the most popular meat and bacon dishes across the globe.

The ranking is made based on gastronomy publications and public opinion. In other words, being at the top of this award is indeed a recognition of popularity. In front of our Barreado were the Rouladen – the German steak – and the Australian Burger, which also includes pickled beetroot in the composition of the sandwich.

Not to belittle the other dishes, but those who voted for them certainly don’t know the flavor of Barreado. Cooked for hours in closed pans with a starch made from cassava flour and water, barreado has a concentrated flavor and a mouth-watering aroma. Typical food on the coast of Paraná – especially in the cities in the Serra do Mar region – it gained popularity during Carnival.

Revelers went out to enjoy the party and left the meat on the fire to be slowly prepared. When we returned, the richly flavored stew was ready to be consumed. It was time to eat, regain energy and get back to the festivities! In 2022, the dish gained the title of Geographical Indication, which makes the dish prepared on the coast of the state unique in the way tradition dictates.

And what is this traditional way like? The beef must be cooked for hours in a covered pan (i.e. closed with flour and water) and seasonings. Afterwards, the stew must be served with local cassava flour – fine and white -, forming a pirão. Along with sliced ​​banana. A tasty pepper and a glass of banana cachaça make the meal complete.

At the beginning of November, the Good Gourmet went down the mountains and promoted the Bom Gourmet Blues Festival in partnership with the Bom Gourmet Festival and the Morretes Blues Festival. Six restaurants in Morretes participated in the action, which offered Barreado a service at a single price of R$49.90.

Besides Barreado: another typical dish from Paraná has already appeared on the TasteAtlas list

This is not the first time that a typical Paraná dish has appeared prominently on TasteAtlas lists. Carne de Onça, which is on its way to becoming a Geographical Indication product of Curitiba, is in the publication’s ranking as one of the most popular raw meat dishes in the world. In this case, the dish from Paraná occupies tenth position on the list.

The snack is recognized as an intangible heritage of Curitiba and is a mandatory presence on the menus of bars in Curitiba. The meat used is beef, and the most popular theory about the name explains that the preparation leaves a “jaguar breath” in whoever eats it.

The dish dates back to the 1940s. It was created in the Buraco do Tatu bar, which was located on the corner of Rua XV and Marechal Floriano. Cristiano Schmidt, owner of the bar and president of the Britânia Foot Ball Club, took the players to the bar to celebrate the team’s victories, with lots of beer and jaguar meat. In the following decades, it spread throughout the city and today there are few bars in Curitiba where you cannot find the snack.

This year, in fact, it was once again on the Bom Gourmet Award list. Readers chose Cartolas Sports Bar’s Carne de Onça as the best in Curitiba. Your Karel Restobar, Mavy PUB, Quitutto Gastropub and Bar da Maniacs were among the finalists in the category.
