Brazil had the second confirmed case of avian flu in a domesticated animal. The infected bird was in a house in the city of Maracajá, in Santa Catarina. It was the first case in the state in a domestic animal.

The state secretary of Agriculture released a note, this Saturday (15), that the infection of a bird was found in a “subsistence creation (backyard)”.

The samples collected from the bird were taken to the LFDA/SP (Federal Agricultural Defense Laboratory of São Paulo), which confirmed the diagnosis for Avian Influenza (H5N1) this Saturday.

“(The case) does not compromise the health condition of the State of Santa Catarina and the country as free of HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza), since commercial production continues without any registration. Therefore, it should not impact the international trade of products poultry farms in Santa Catarina”, informed the secretariat.

In the statement, the agency states that measures are being applied to eradicate outbreaks of avian flu in the state. The secretariat also requested that people communicate in case of birds that have breathing difficulties, staggering walk, torticollis, turning on their own axis or high and sudden mortality.

The communication can be made through the e-Sisbravet system or at an office of Cidasc (Integrated Agricultural Development Company of Santa Catarina).

This is the second confirmed in the state. On June 27, the secretariat announced a case in a wild bird of the Trinta-Réis-Real species in São Francisco do Sul.
