On May 3, 2020, Jair Bolsonaro went to the ramp of the Palácio do Planalto to welcome a demonstration in favor of a coup d’état. The then president went to the group, which called for military intervention in the country and the closure of the STF, to attack the court. “We will not tolerate any more interference. Patience is over,” he said.
The Attorney General’s Office saw no problem in that Sunday’s episode. Months after the act, Augusto Aras’ team refused to open an investigation against the president, with the argument that Bolsonaro’s behavior did not represent a “real risk” to the democratic regime.
Few institutions saw the broth of the coup being cultivated so close to their noses as the PGR. Responsible for investigating cases involving the president and other authorities, the body was asked to analyze the conduct of Bolsonaro and his supporters dozens of times. In most of them, no one smelled anything.
Augusto Aras will be remembered as the investigator who described the act of September 7, 2021, as “a civic party with peaceful demonstrations”, in which Bolsonaro threatened to disregard court orders from the STF. The following year, when the president used the holiday demonstrations to intimidate the court, the head of the PGR spoke of a “day of peace”.
The prosecutor only found something wrong after a mob, fueled by years of “peaceful demonstrations”, invaded the three Powers to overthrow a government. In a hasty conversion, Aras created a group to combat anti-democratic acts, agreed to investigate Bolsonaro and promised to denounce 200 people for the attacks.
The head of the PGR cannot claim lack of notice. In May 2021, deputy electoral attorney general Renato Brill de Góes told the Sheet that misinformation about the electronic voting machines would cause the population to be “inspired to demonstrate” against the result of the election. A month later, he was fired.
