The Mixed Parliamentary Front for Education, which brings together 312 federal deputies and 42 senators, will launch, in the next few days, a temporary coordination to address the issue of violence in Brazilian schools. The decision was taken on Wednesday (5), after the attack that took place at a day care center in Blumenau (SC) that resulted in the death of four children.

The idea is for the group to build an intensive agenda of conversations with specialists and people directly impacted by this type of violence to formulate proposals for the Legislative and Executive branches. The creation of a national mental health policy in schools and mechanisms to monitor hate speech are on the radar, so that new episodes are avoided.

“Parliament needs to respond in a multi-party, responsible and urgent manner”, says federal deputy Tabata Amaral (PSB), who chairs the front, to the column. In addition to her, Senator Professora Dorinha (União Brasil-TO), who is Honorary President of the parliamentary front, Senator Alessandro Vieira (PSDB-SE) and Deputy Ana Pimentel (PT-MG) participated in the decision to create the coordination. of the vice-presidency, and federal deputy Eduardo Bismarck (PDT-CE), general secretary of the collegiate.

“I am following with great anguish and concern the attacks, the threats, everything that we are facing in education”, says Tabata. “We need to move forward again on the issue of mental health, safety protocols that can be followed by schools and monitoring this hate speech towards them, which is happening on social networks”, she continues.

The parliamentarian recalls that there is already a law, sanctioned under the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), which provides for the mandatory provision of psychological care and social assistance in public schools in the basic education network – but says that it has not been put into effect. practice.

“I’m sure that its implementation is also a fundamental step”, says the researcher. “There is a security aspect, this increase that we are seeing in hate groups and those that encourage violence on social networks, but there is also a mental health aspect. And we need to respond to it.”

According to the deputy, the Joint Parliamentary Front for Education is already being sought by state secretaries of education, organizations and parents to address the issue of violence in the school environment. “I hope I can bring answers very quickly [a partir] of this coordination. I know that people are rightly scared and that they need that urgency, that responsibility and that work.”

As shown to Sheet, Brazil has suffered more than one attack each month in schools since August last year. In eight months, there were nine attacks of extreme violence, with seven deaths.

The survey, carried out by a group that brings together researchers from Unicamp and Unesp, accounts for 22 attacks on Brazilian schools since 2002, with a total of 35 deaths (not counting the relative of one of the aggressors in Suzano, killed by them on the way to school ).

This means that, in 20 years, from 2002 to July 2022, there were 13 attacks, an average, therefore, of just over one attack every two years. The average that was biennial became monthly from August 2022, an explosion of violence.

The survey considers only attacks of extreme violence, that is, in which there were attempts to commit crimes against life, and which were planned; therefore, fights that arise in the school environment, even the most violent ones, are excluded.

Of the 22 attacks, 16 were committed by students and 12 by alumni. The aggressors are between 10 and 25 years old, most are white and male. Twelve were carried out with firearms, and six already had a gun at home.
