A World Athletics, The international athletics federation has banned transgender women from participating in elite women’s competition and tightened testosterone restrictions for other female athletes, the organization announced Thursday.
the president of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, said the decision to exclude transgender women who had gone through male puberty was based on “on the primordial need to protect the female category”.
Tighter measures around one of the sport’s most controversial and polarizing issues follow a similar move in swimming in 2022.
The board of the entity also approved by vote the cut of the maximum amount of plasmatic testosterone for athletes with Disturbances in the Sexual Development (DDS) by half, from 5 to 2.5 nanomoles per liter.
Athletes with DDS will also have to reduce their testosterone levels below the new threshold for a minimum of 24 months in all events to compete, double the previous time.
The governing body had already proposed the option for transgender athletes to be able to compete in the female category if they also kept testosterone levels below 2.5 nanomoles per liter for 24 months.
However, the body said on Thursday (24) that it was clear that there was little support within the sport for this proposal. “We are not saying no forever”said Coe at a press conference.
Coe announced the formation of a working group, which will be chaired by a transgender person, to further study the issue of trans inclusion.
