Athletico 100 years: Zé Roberto, the Gazela

The legend of Zé Roberto in Paraná football it lasted a decade that began and ended at Athletico. José Roberto MarquesGazela, emerged in the 1960s as one of the most promising players to emerge after Pelé. Tall and apparently clumsy, the young star fell in favor with Vicente Feola, coach of São Paulo and the Brazilian team that competed in the Tokyo Olympics in 1964 .

On the field, Zé Roberto soon became an idol and with 24 goals he was the top scorer in the 1968 Paranaense Championship, the best competition of all time. The last goal on this list took the final to a third playoff match, but it didn’t go quite like that as we all know…
Zé Roberto, however, stayed for the historic Robertão 68 campaign. He shone, but did not stay the following year because Furacão did not have the Cr$ 100 thousand stipulated for his pass. The club even carried out a series of promotions and friendly games to reach the magic number, but did not achieve it and gave up on Zé Roberto to the panic of its fans.
Three weeks later, a bombshell: Zé Roberto was loaned to rival Coritiba, where he played like no one else. In 1977, at the age of 31, he returned to wearing the red and black shirt, but he was no longer physically fit and decided to stop after a game against Colorado, after getting injured in the first few minutes. The retirement announcement was made the day before Elvis Presley’s death.
In the newspaper Diário do Paraná, columnist Renato Toniolo wrote an emotional text in which he compared the “Gazela” to the King of Rock, as both would be “fallen angels expelled from the ephemeral paradise of applause”.
