At COP 28, Wilson Lima presents ‘Amazonas 2030’ to combat deforestation in the State

Program will reinforce the fight against forest degradation and foresees raising R$1 billion through the sale of carbon credits

Governor Wilson Lima launched, this Sunday (3), the Amazonas 2030 Program to reduce deforestation in the state, which will be implemented with resources raised from the sale of carbon credits. The strategy was presented on the second day of commitments by the Amazon delegation at the 28th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, COP 28, in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

The central objective of Amazonas 2030, according to the governor of the largest Brazilian state, with 1.5 million square kilometers and 97% of preserved natural area, is to achieve zero net deforestation in the state over the next six years, with reinforcement of actions already ongoing and with the implementation of new measures.v

“On the one hand, we work to preserve, with our boldest goal which is zero net deforestation by 2030, and also to preserve people, generating income opportunities, generating jobs and combating poverty, which with poverty we cannot achieve. preserve our forests”,

highlighted Wilson Lima.

As part of the Amazonas 2030 objectives, the State Government hopes to raise R$1 billion in 2024, with the sale of credits worth 809.6 million tons of carbon equivalent (tCO2e), generated from emissions reductions between 2006 -2015. The resource will finance the proposals present in the document. To this end, the Amazon Jurisdictional REDD+ Program (acronym for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) was created.

“We are creating the 2030 Agenda Fund so that, effectively, we start receiving these carbon credits, already following the line of what the world does. And we are very calm about the legal framework, all the laws that we are creating, approving, to provide the necessary security for those who, voluntarily, present their projects for this purpose, can have this legal security in the state of Amazonas” ,

Amazon 2030

The Amazonas 2030 Program is a call from the State Government to carry out concrete actions to conserve the Amazon biome and improve people’s lives. It foresees areas of action such as: Climate Change Mitigation and Conservation and Sustainable Development. To this end, a Work Plan will be created with goals and monitoring mechanisms, defining deadlines, bodies involved and partners.

Furthermore, the document also lists 22 existing projects in the State in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations (UN). Among them: the Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Legal Amazon; Forest School project; Guardians of the Forest Program; and food security actions.

Another five projects, also aligned with the SDGs and present in the document, include: Integrated Management of the Putumayo-Içá River Basin, located on the border between Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil; Consolidation Program of the National Pact for Water Management – ​​PROGESTÃO (3rd Cycle); Photovoltaics; Amazonas Technological Park; and Regional Logistics Infrastructure.

Even with the challenges of transitioning to a low-emissions economy, the document also points out that the Government of Amazonas has already invested, with its own resources, around R$1.2 billion in actions to guarantee results compatible with the Amazonas 2030 Program proposal. .

The new program also seeks to raise awareness among developed countries and nations of their responsibility in financing initiatives that cooperate with poorer regions, with the aim of overcoming the double challenge of drastically reducing deforestation and reducing the poverty prevalent in these regions.

Amazonas 2030 highlights that the state, in addition to being the largest in Brazil, with more than 1.5 million km² of territorial extension, is home to the largest forest in the world, with 97% of the natural coverage preserved, of which 53.8% in protected areas, and which concentrates the largest indigenous population in the country.
