Just like Mauricio Shogun, Glover Teixeira is now part of the “team” of former fighters, and why not, MMA legends. Defeated by unanimous decision by Jamahal Hill in a light heavyweight belt dispute in the main event of UFC Rio, which took place last Saturday (21), in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian, currently 43 years old, announced his retirement from MMA still inside the octagon, right after the fight against the American.
“I’m too tough for my own health. It’s time to stop. I’m going to put my energies into Alex Poatan. He’s going to hold his belt and then go up and be light heavyweight champion. I’m going to stop. It’s an honor to stop at same night as (Mauricio) Shogun”, said the man from Minas Gerais.
Despite the defeat, Glover Teixeira left the octagon applauded by the audience present at the Jeunesse Arena, considering that he delivered a true battle against Jamahal Hill and showed impressive resistance, seeking victory until the last second of the confrontation.
Glover Teixeira ends his MMA career with 33 wins (18 by knockout, 10 by submission and five by decision) and nine losses. The Brazilian had been fighting for the UFC since 2012, and along that path, he had beaten names like Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Ryan Bader, Rashad Evans, Anthony Smith, Thiago Marreta and Jan Blachowicz. In addition to winning the light heavyweight belt in 2021, Glover also fought battles against Alexander Gustafsson and Jon Jones, other legendary names in the under-93 kg division.
