It wasn’t the closest choice to my parents, because I had to move. […] Unicamp grants help me support myself and I even have all the grants. I came here knowing that I would have more opportunities and, in fact, I am having many, ”she says. According to the student, who has completed 43 free courses on Astronomy, Physics and Mathematics, academic life has not been easy, but the challenge is fun and surprising. “Once you enter a building that is a giant library, you study and there are different things you’ve never seen. It’s really like that. Every day you see something different”, she says, excited. The sky is the limit One of the main reasons for choosing the Campinas university, according to Ana Beatriz, is the dream of becoming a researcher in the future. An admirer of science and defender of the importance of scientific research in Brazil, the young woman is eager to discover what the market has to offer. “[O futuro] it will depend a lot on the opportunities that I will have, that’s the fact. But I wanted to do research in Brazil and in the Brazilian market, contributing to society in general. It is my intention. Now, for example, if I see that Brazil is leaving me behind, then I’m going to leave [do país]”, he says. The passion for science is not new. In high school, when she had her first contacts with Physics at the State Technical School (Etec) in Sapopemba, the student discovered new universes – always driven by a dedicated teacher who believed in her potential. The entire detection process is done through software, using crossed information, videos and graphics. The award for detecting nine asteroids took place in November last year, at a ceremony held in Brasília (DF). To go to the city to receive recognition, Ana Beatriz says that she had to organize a raffle to pay all the costs. “[Senti] joy for knowing that I was going to receive an award, and fear of not working out, of not being able to go, of not having money, anyway. That’s when I opened a raffle. It was a very long process. If I’m not mistaken, I managed to sell all the issues in about a month. There were days when I didn’t sell anything, I was a little desperate, but it worked out in the end”, she recalls. After so many recognitions and achievements, it’s not hard to imagine that other girls might be following, admiring and being inspired by her story. For them, Ana Beatriz has important advice on the tip of her tongue: persistence. “In a class of eighty-nine people, there are, I don’t know, ten women. It’s not easy for you to look to the side and not see any women there, or see few. Sometimes we even feel a little uncomfortable, thinking ‘is this place for me?’. I tell you to be persistent and not get discouraged, be inspired by other women because there are many incredible women who can help you”.
