The Association of Relatives and Victims of January 8th (Asfav) released this Thursday (21) an urgent statement warning about the serious health condition of four prisoners and showing concern regarding preventive detention. The statement was delivered to several federal agencies and the judiciary.
Among the prisoners mentioned, some have comorbidities such as heart disease, pre-diabetes, suspected cancer, toxoplasmosis, perforated eardrum and even use of a catheter to urinate, as shown by Gazeta do Povo.
In the statement, the association demands a position on the provisional release of Jorge Luiz dos Santos, who received a favorable opinion for release on 13/09, and is awaiting release to undergo surgery.
“We respectfully and urgently reiterate that restriction of freedom cannot be a death sentence,” the statement said.
The association also reinforces the health status of prisoner Claudinei Pego da Silva, who attempted suicide on January 9th, at the Papuda Penitentiary Complex, and is not among those released. He suffers from comorbidities and has already had an opinion from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) in favor of provisional release, but freedom was denied by Minister Alexandre de Moraes.
Other prisoners with serious comorbidities, such as farmer Jorginho Cardoso de Azevedo, aged 63, and engineer Renan da Silva Sena, aged 60, also remain in prison. The two were mentioned in Asfav’s new communications to ministers this week and have already been mentioned in a report by Gazeta do Povo due to the seriousness of the cases.
The institutions activated by the association were:
- Ministry of Human Rights;
- Cabinets are all STF Ministers;
- Attorney General’s Office;
- Union Public Defender’s Office;
- OAB Federal Council;
- Justice ministry.
“We hope that institutions become aware of the seriousness of maintaining these and other illegal prisons, and that more lives are prevented from being lost due to abuses committed by the Federal Supreme Court”, highlighted Asfav.
