Artists bring the magic of traditional games to riverside communities

Gemerson, wheel games, monkey, tug of war, spinning top, shuttlecock, rubber band and dodgeball are among the games that make up the dynamics of the project.

Students from the José Sobreira do Nascimento Municipal School, located in the Nossa Senhora de Fátima riverside community, in Tarumãzinho, in Manaus, will receive on the 6th, 7th and 8th of March, the project “Popular Traditions: the rescue of Traditional Children’s Games in Manaus ”, which aims to promote the preservation and appreciation of popular culture, memory, history and cultural identity, through the practice of traditional children’s games in Manaus.

The idea for the project came from a meeting between artist Naymeê Sahdo and cultural producer and pedagogue Wagner Moreira, who in a conversation analyzed the fact that children and teenagers of this generation are unaware of the games played in the 80s and 90s in Manaus, and how this interaction is important in building affective bonds, social, emotional and cognitive development, and of course, transmitting the legacy of popular culture to the next generations, as living this experience means recognizing oneself as a subject belonging to a certain cultural context.

Naymeê Sahdo, whose main character is the Clown Yakissoba, will use her empathy with children and young people to be a facilitating agent, essential in the construction of knowledge through play.

“Without a doubt, this revival of traditional games in Manaus will be very important for this first location where we are taking the project, as today we see that children and teenagers are focused on other interests, such as cell phones. It is necessary to encourage other skills and value local popular culture. We will play monkey, shuttlecock, rubber band, circle games, egg and spoon race, dodgeball, tug of war, and of course, the most popular of all games, Gemerson”, explains Naymeê Sahdo.

For Wagner Moreira, the development of this project has a social impact wherever it is applied, regardless of whether in the Rural, Riverine or Urban Zone of Manaus.

“We need to understand the new social context in which the current generation is inserted. Rescuing the traditional games of Manaus means preserving the history, memory and cultural identity of our region. Collective work during games and making toys develops expressive potential, stimulates sensitivity, self-esteem, respect for others and the construction of new learning processes. Developing activities like this will undoubtedly stimulate values ​​of the culture of peace, privileging dialogue in resolving conflicts through art and popular culture”, states Wagner Moreira.

This project was included in the MANAUS FAZ CULTURE 2023 PROGRAM notice, from the City of Manaus, and meets the municipality’s Itinerant Culture Program.

This will be the first activity carried out in partnership between the artistic companies Cultura Amazônica and Macarrão Animações, both with extensive experience and recognition for their cultural performance, trajectory and achievements.
