Arthur Lira ‘publicly reprimands’ Nikolas Ferreira for transphobic speech

Mineiro parliamentarian is the target of impeachment requests after offending minorities in the Chamber of Deputies

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP), made a ‘public reprimand’ to federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL) this Wednesday (8). The parliamentarian offended trans women in a speech in the plenary of the House on Interactional Women’s Day.

“The plenary of the Chamber of Deputies is not a stage for exhibitionism, much less prejudiced speeches. I will not admit disrespect against anyone”, wrote Lira in her profiles. “Deputy Nikolas Ferreira deserves my public reprimand for his attitude today,” she added.

In addition to the ‘reprimand’ from the leader of the deputies, Nikolas is the target of impeachment requests for his speech. The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office also joined the case and asked for the parliamentarian to be held accountable for the transphobic action.

In the publication made on Thursday night, Lira does not make it clear whether he will support the requests against Nikolas Ferreira. In the responses to the tweet, the parliamentarian was strongly charged for the progress of the actions.

During the session this afternoon, Nikolas Ferreira wore a blonde wig and said that women would be losing ground to “men who feel like women”. He has also made a number of other transphobic claims.

Shortly after the statement, federal deputy Tabata Amaral (PSB–SP) announced that she will present to the Chamber’s Ethics Council a request to revoke the mandate of the far-right deputy.

PSOL, whose bench is led by Sâmia Bomfim (SP), informed that it will file a criminal notice with the Federal Supreme Court.
