Arns Commission requests annulment of tribute to Erasmo Dias – 06/29/2023 – Panel

The Arns Commission on Human Rights sent an official letter to the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), asking for the annulment of the tribute to Colonel Erasmo Dias, exponent of the military dictatorship, who will name a road interchange in Paraguaçu Paulista, the city where he was born .

As the Panel advanced, the tribute, proposed by former Bolsonarist deputy Frederico D’Avila (PL), was approved by the Legislative Assembly and sanctioned by Tarcísio this Wednesday (28).

“A supporter of the use of truculence against the civilian population, students and militants of the resistance to the military coup, Erasmo Dias, who died in 2010, boasts a grim curriculum formed from his positions of command, when he undertook actions of repression, torture and death in the so-called years of lead”, says the letter to Tarcísio, signed by former ministers Claudia Costin, José Carlos Dias, Paulo Vannuchi and Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, as well as former Italian senator José Luiz Del Roio.

Dias, who was also a state deputy, became famous for the invasion of PUC in 1977, when he was secretary of Public Security in São Paulo. On that occasion, hundreds of students were arrested. He also participated in other repressive activities during the military regime.

“Certainly that the state of São Paulo does not deserve to have this stain on its history, we ask Your Excellency that the shameful honor be promptly annulled”, says the Arns Commission.
