Army will live with ghost of Bolsonarist coup – 06/17/2023 – Bruno Boghossian

For two months, a military man assigned to the General Staff of the Army blew out the embers of the coup that burned in Jair Bolsonaro’s office. After the defeat at the polls, Colonel Jean Lawand Junior asked the president to order an intervention by the Armed Forces to spoil the election. “For God’s sake, the man has to give the order,” he wrote.

The expectation of a coup would not have survived for so long had there not been sympathy for the idea in high military circles. Although the agitation in the reserve was more apparent, there is evidence of concrete movements in active duty and in important positions in the hierarchy.

Lawand’s messages were found on the cell phone of Mauro Cid, Bolsonaro’s inseparable assistant. According to Veja magazine, the active-duty colonel demanded measures and said that, even if the top of the Army did not support the coup, the rest of the corporation would comply with orders for an intervention.

The military even promised Bolsonaro the help of a general. Lawand told Cid that the then Deputy Commander of Army Land Operations would follow the president’s determination for a break.

Other active duty military transmitted their dreams to Planalto, according to the PF. Lieutenant Colonel Marcelino Haddad sent Cid three documents that were used to draw up a plan that would annul the election, remove ministers from the TSE and decree an intervention.

Cid lowered the ball, but didn’t cut the scammers. He lamented and said that the president could not order an intervention because he did not trust the Army High Command. In his last speech in office, Bolsonaro would confirm the attempt and the frustration: “For you to achieve something, even within the four lines, you need to have support”.

Evidence of active-duty military involvement doesn’t just create an embarrassment for commanders. They show that the Forces will be obliged to live with the ghost of the Bolsonarist coup for a long time — and to provide some response.
