Argentine newspaper says ‘gold iPhones’ were not paid for or asked for by Messi; businessman would be behind marketing action

The newspaper “Olé” gave more details about the alleged delivery of 35 gold-plated iPhones 14 to the world champion squad of Argentina. According to the Argentine daily, the cell phones were not paid for by Messi, as the international press reported this Thursday, and were not even delivered to the player. Everything would be a marketing action.
The original author of the post with photos of the cell phones and another one alongside Messi, businessman Benjamin Lyons, owner of the company iDesign Gold, specialized in customizing cell phones from the line, would be behind the action. According to “Olé”, Messi did not pay for the devices, much less received the other 34 – apart from the one with his name – to deliver to his teammates. Lyons would only have taken advantage of the meeting to promote the company, in a publicity move. iDesign Gold would be the one to deliver the devices.
The businessman is a longtime acquaintance of Messi. The two had already met on other occasions and Messi had already been introduced to another gold-plated iPhone, the model 13. This time, they met a day after The Best ceremony, when the Argentine received his seventh best player award in the world by FIFA.
On his Instagram, Lyons appears alongside the greats of world football, such as Ronaldinho, Neymar, Mbappé and Thiago Silva. The businessman has athletes as his main clients. In addition to cell phones, his company customizes watches and headphones.
