Arco Norte ports export 36% of Brazilian corn – 06/22/2023 – Vaivém

Exports through the so-called Arco Norte ports accelerated a lot this year. From January to May, 3.8 million tons of corn left through these ports, 36% of the volume exported by Brazil. In the same period last year, participation was 26%.

The main ports in the Southeast and South have lost space in cereal output. Santos (SP), Paranaguá (PR) and São Francisco do Sul (SC) shipped 5.8 million tons, 55% of the total volume. In the first five months of 2022, these three ports accounted for 66% of foreign sales.

The port of Santos, through which 2.6 million tons of corn left this year, had a reduction in its participation in national exports to 24.5%, below the 35.4% of the same period last year. The data are from the monthly logistic bulletin of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The ports of Arco Norte increase the national participation due to Mato Grosso, the state that led cereal exports, reaching a volume of 4.6 million tons in the first five months. Paraná, with 1.5 million, and Mato Grosso do Sul, with 1.3 million, came next.

Soybean exports did not have major changes this year compared to the accumulated from January to May 2022. The ports of Arco Norte, Santos and Paranaguá had a slight reduction in the share of exports. Those from Rio Grande (RS) and São Francisco do Sul (SC) increased their participation.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, based on data from Secex (Secretary of Foreign Trade), accumulated exports up to May totaled 49 million tons, led by Mato Grosso (17.3 million), Goiás (5.6 million) and Paraná (3.7 million).

The entry of fertilizers through the North and Northeast ports reached 27% of the total purchased by Brazil this year. In 2022, the share was 24.5%. Total imports of fertilizers amount to 13.6 million tons from January to May, 10% less than in the previous year.

Coffee World coffee consumption will be a record in 2023/24, totaling 170.2 million bags, according to projections by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) released this Thursday (22).
