While some guests look for hotels just to spend the night, others look for places that offer a full program or offer extra attractions.

In the eighth chapter of the series about 100 incredible hotels in Brazil, Sheet lists ten cool accommodation options that stand out for good architecture, art, gastronomy and a busy social life.

House B&B
Those who go to Jericoacoara don’t usually pay much attention to Jijoca, the last little town before everything turns to sand. But it is there, on the banks of the Paraíso lagoon, that this inn with five suites is located. The accommodations have the rustic charm of the region, and the deck allows you to enjoy the lagoon. But the hotel is successful thanks mainly to its kitchen, led by chef Delfim Fugiwara, who is dedicated to serving oriental dishes with a hint of Northeast, such as lobster sashimi and tuna tartare with tapioquinha.

B Hotel
With a yellow-tiled swimming pool on its 16th floor, the hotel is home to 16, a bar frequented by Brazilians and culturally-minded tourists and which offers a generous cocktail menu, as well as views of the sunset over the federal capital. Opened in 2017, the building and decoration are by Isay Weinfeld, who also designs most of the hotels in the Fasano group. Although it doesn’t take much effort to compete with the city’s hotel sector, the service and one of the best restaurants in the city place this hotel among the best in Brasília.

Santa Teresa M Gallery
At the top of the Santa Teresa neighborhood, in a rustic mansion surrounded by large windows, is this hotel full of pieces from Brazilian designers and studios, such as Sérgio Rodrigues, Studio Vitty and Oficina de Agosto. With this very Brazilian charm, a swimming pool overlooking Guanabara Bay and a Michelin-starred restaurant —Térèze—, the hotel has become a refuge for international artists visiting Rio. Amy Winehouse, Alicia Keys, James Blunt, Robert Plant and Alanis Morisette.

Selina Copacabana
The Selina chain arrived in Rio, in Lapa, in 2019. Almost two years later, already recognized by digital nomads and the local music scene, the chain opened a second unit in Copacabana. It’s not quite a hostel (although it has shared rooms), but it’s far from the sternness of traditional hotels. So much so that the strength of the network is the social side. On the roof, with a clear view of Copacabana beach, there is a relaxed bar — where the welcome drink is always on the house.

Hotel Arpoador
Generous floor-to-ceiling windows give the impression of bringing the Ipanema sea very close to the rooms (which also have hammocks) of this 1970s hotel that was completely redesigned in 2019. On the ground floor, a beach bar connects the boardwalk to the street behind and allows you to have breakfast outdoors, contemplating one of the most famous landscapes in Brazil. On Thursdays, Noites Gostosas takes place, with live jazz and a special menu of drinks prepared with Pindorama, a cachaça produced by hand 120 km away, in Vale do Café.

January
In 2018, one of the only hotels on the Leblon waterfront gained the founder of Osklen, Oskar Metsavaht, as a partner, who transformed the old Marininha, already sophisticated, in Janeiro, into a more modern project, which frames the blue of the horizon with light colors, carpentry of freijó and straw. Many of the hotel’s 51 rooms offer jaw-dropping views, which can also be seen from the rooftop pool. But it is at Cedilha, a bar and restaurant on the ground floor, that the cool bon vivants of Rio’s south zone meet for a drink.

Altar
Located in the middle of a dam near Joanópolis, a small town two hours from the capital of São Paulo, Altar is not exactly a hotel — but it is certainly busier than any of them. In this self-sufficient floating house, the proposal is total disconnection, but with maximum comfort, including luxury linen, record player, fireplace, deck with lounger, barbecue and even a kayak to navigate the dam. The proposal was so successful that the house gained sisters spread across the interior — some on dry land, also in Joanópolis, and another floating, close to Tapiraí, in Vale do Ribeira.

Rosewood São Paulo
The first Rosewood in Brazil is located in an old maternity hospital from the 1940s, close to Avenida Paulista. After years of closure, the place that saw half a million São Paulo residents born has been transformed into a refined hotel that is home to the city’s most popular events. The project has the signature of Pritzker winner Jean Nouvel and interiors that mix a mix of representations of Brazilian culture with the most luxurious in global hotels — including bathrooms all in marble and coverings that allow you to see the grains of different types of wood .

Tivoli Mofarrej
Opened in the 1980s, this five-star hotel one block from Avenida Paulista was completely renovated in 2009, adding the first Anantara spa in the West. But its main features are still there: the chandelier with 1,367 lamps; the famous 750m² presidential suite (the largest in Latin America, a true mansion). Not to mention the bar and restaurant on the 23rd floor, a panoramic room with one of the best views of the city that, in 2017, was reborn as Seen, which has popular rooftops in Portugal and Thailand.

Unique
Ruy Ohtake’s second hotel in the capital of São Paulo opened in 2002 and became an architectural landmark in the city. The curves of the facade, an inverted arch that appears to float, also mark the interior, where winding corridors with round windows lead to unusual rooms, whose floor rises in a curve until it touches the ceiling. But it’s not just because of its architecture that Unique has remained relevant for more than 20 years. The “soul of the hotel”, as he himself describes it, is Skye, its popular rooftop with 360º views of the city and a DJ every night.
Av. Brigadeiro Luís Antônio, 4,700, Jardim Paulista, São Paulo (SP). Daily rates from R$3,600 at hotelunique.com
