Through a joint note published this Friday (21), attorneys general of Military Justice, Antônio Pereira Duarte; the Federal District and Territories MP, Georges Carlos Fredderico Moreira Seigneur; and Labor, José de Lima Ramos Pereira congratulated the Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, for “strengthening the Brazilian Public Ministry”. The communiqué is seen as yet another gesture by prosecutors in favor of reappointing Aras as head of the Federal Public Ministry (MPF).

The movement of the Public Ministry, as well as its main members, follows in the wake of a campaign for Aras to be reappointed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to the command of the PGR.

Aras’ mandate ends in September of this year. An eventual reappointment would take place in October. The main argument in favor of Aras is his performance in the Lava Jato operation. In 2021, he formally ended the task force in Paraná.

“The Military Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Federal District and Territories and the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Labor could not fail to express recognition of the effort undertaken by the Attorney General of the Republic to enable notable and relevant advances in favor of internal and external democracy, as well as for the continuous improvement of the Brazilian Public Prosecutor’s Office, thus expressing unrestricted support and conviction regarding the competence, technique and impartiality of the actions of the Chief of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Union”, said the MPs in a statement.

On Thursday (20), the National Association of Members of the Public Ministry (Conamp), also praised Aras, “rejecting external influences or political pressures from the past”. Already on Wednesday (19), members of the National Council of the Public Prosecutor’s Office expressed unrestricted support for the president of the body.

On social media, the PGR wrote that it had demonstrated over the last four years a willingness to “disrupt the foundations of car wash operations”.

Aras is recognized behind the scenes of politics for having “shielded” former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) from lawsuits filed by the opposition in recent years.

Lula has already warned that he will not follow the triple list prepared by class entities, but has not yet disclosed who will be chosen.

Other names are also considered in the dispute, such as deputy attorney Antônio Carlos Bigonha, who criticizes the role of the Public Ministry in Lava Jato; and deputy prosecutor Paulo Gonet, who is close to ministers Gilmar Mendes and Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
